Stephen C. Elder died at Lucas, Wednesday, October 19, 1898, aged 91 years and 6 months. Deceased was born in Kentucky, April 9, 1807. He moved from there to Indiana, and from there to Iowa in 1849, and settled at Round Grove, Marion county. At the age of 20 years he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Stuart. To this union 11 children were born: Rev. Harrison Elder of California; Dr. Alfred of Nebraska; S.G. of Knoxville; Franklin P. of Council Bluffs; Emila now Mrs. Bonebrake of Minnesota; Rena, now Mrs Jenkins, who live to mourn the loss of their father. The children who preceded him were Josephine (Mrs. J.R. Sage); Martha (Mrs. Maddy); and James Winfield Scott.

Probably no man in Marion County had a wider acquaintance than Father Elder. He was a fond father, a loving husband, a kind neighbor, loved and esteemed by all who knew him.

The remains were brought from Lucas and interred beside those of his beloved wife in Concord cemetery, Thursday, October 20. The services were conducted by Rev. Wright, of the Christain church of this city.
