Seaman Second Class Slater was one of 19 crew Killed in Action aboard USS San Francisco (CA-38) when the heavy cruiser was attacked by a Japanese torpedo bomber off Lunga Point, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. The torpedo failed to do damage, but the plane crashed into the aft of the ship.

For refusing to abandon his anti-aircraft gunnery station, and firing his 20mm gun until the moment of impact, Seaman Slater was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for gallantry. The destroyer escort USS Slater (DE-766) was named in his memory.
