Alvin began his education with the Gladewater ISD where he graduated in 1986.

Alvin played football and basketball throughout his high school years. He attended Community Connections in Longview, Texas, where he received his certification in contracting. He was a member of the Ruff Ryders Motorcycle Club of Tyler, Texas.

Alvin was baptized under Elder Hilburn and an active member of County Line Church of the Living God until he began to fellowship with Victory Temple Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Pastor Robert Hicks.

Alvin is preceded in death by his father Darrel Ates Sr., grandparents, Robert and Mattie Hicks, Oscar and Terrell Phillips Ates; Uncle Supt. Riley Hicks and bonus Uncle James E. Calico.

He leaves to cherish his love and memories: MOTHER: Mary Lee Ates of Kilgore, CHILDREN; Brittany Morse (Todd) of Houston, Amanda (Zavean) Miller of Gladewater, Emmanuel (Brianna) Davis of Kilgore, Adrian Lacy, Alvin Ates Jr. and Aayliyah Ates of Winona.
