Jill Brumley Sarver passed away at home on September 6, 2022 at the age of 71 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by loved ones, who will continue to honor her by living their lives to the fullest. Jill was preceded in death by her parents Judith Spence Brumley and Paul Cromwell Brumley and brothers David and Patrick Brumley. Jill was born on February 22, 1951 in Norfolk, Virginia.
Jill obtained an Associate degree from Montreat College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Virginia Wesleyan University. Looking to fulfill her goal as a guidance counselor, she earned a Master's degree of Science and Education from Old Dominion University. She was very proud to be the first in her family to graduate from college.
Jill began her career at Missions Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina before returning to Virginia Beach. She worked for the City of Virginia Beach Schools in various departments. The position that touched her heart was being a guidance counselor at Open Campus High School, a school that focused on alternative education for teens. She championed the underdog and helped many students chart a successful path forward.
Jill was a life long member of Oak Grove Baptist Church where she attended with her family and friends. She loved a good book, a nice glass of wine, wearing large hats, and let us not forget the shoes. Also, Jill dearly loved her family, especially her grandchildren, attending sports events for her children and grandchildren, traveling in Europe, and mountain trips with her entire family, her love for the North Carolina Mountains never wavering.
Jill is survived by her husband of 40 years, Jim Sarver, her sons Judson (Lesley) and Berend (Liz). "Grancie" was affectionately known to her grandchildren, Noah, Korey, Eli, Marley, and Ruthie. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Karen Brumley and her aunt, Anna Spence. Jill had a large extended family of first cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Saturday September 17, 2022 at Oak Grove Baptist Church from 10:00-10:45 am. The service will follow at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations be made to The Doorways, 612 E. Marshall Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219, a residential facility for families with extended medical needs. Online condolences may be offered to the family at hdoliver.com.
