Caleb Chapman, and together they crossed the plains with ox teams in 1848, arriving in Salem September 20th of that year, and settled three miles east of Salem near the present location of the Rickey school house. Later they located on Howell Prairie, where they took a donation land claim, and here they remained until 1863, when the family moved to Salem. Here Rev. Chapman, who was a minister of the Christian church, died eight years ago, after a service in the ministry for fifty-three years. Deceased was a member of the Christian church nearly all her life, and died in that faith.

The funeral will be held from the First Christian church, tomorrow (Friday) afternoon, at 2 o'clock, Rev. J. J. Evans officiating.
