Metallurgist, musician, peace activist, avid gardener. Born in Germany, she immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1959, acquired permanent residency in 1964 and became a naturalized United States citizen in 1975.
Mea Fiedler was born in Dessau, Germany, but grew up in Stuttgart. Following World War II, She finished her secondary education and was accepted at the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research where she completed a three-year metallography training program. Jobs followed in Munich and Stuttgart.
In 1964, Mea was recruited by North Carolina State University as a research assistant in the School of Engineering and then transitioned to a faculty position in 1974 after obtaining Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from NCSU in metallurgical engineering. Her interest in the field extended to serving as the chairperson of the Carolinas Central Chapter of ASM International as well as a member of the German Materials Society.
Mea left academia in 1978 to serve as the Chief Metallurgist for an automotive components company in Sanford, NC, later working as a metallurgist, materials engineer and reliability engineer in California, Arizona and New York.
In 1992, Mea returned to Raleigh to enjoy retirement, but she was enticed back to NCSU in 1999 and served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering until 2013.
Her second retirement allowed Mea to indulge in horticulture and fill her half-acre lawn with beautiful plants, many of them started from clippings and nurtured by her incredible green thumb. In addition to sharing her love of plants with the Gardeners of Wake County, Mea was an active member of the local German Club and the Democratic Women of Wake County. Mea loved music and was a passionate supporter of the N.C. Symphony and a long-time member of the Chancel Choir at Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Maria-Luise "Mea" Fiedler died at the age of 92, remaining engaged and engaging to the end. She was survived by a brother, sister-in-law, niece, nephew and goddaughter in Germany, as well as friends throughout the U.S.A. who were like family to her.
