Doris Verlene Schoen Gardner - 1936 to 2022
Doris Verlene Schoen Gardner was born on October 21, 1936 to Walter and Lura (Moore) Schoen in Pflugerville, Texas. On February 6, 2022 in Wimberley, Texas, she was taken home to her heavenly Father.
Doris was an amazing person. She was a warm and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was the perfect example of a hostess with a unique knack of making visitors feel "at home" and comfortable. You were always welcome to visit. Her door was always open. She absolutely loved people. She never met a stranger.
One of her favorite stories was her experience at Dessau Hall. They went to a dance and just happened to have a guest join their table—Elvis Presley. She would also tell about the trips to New York City with Willie Nelson and the family or maybe a story or two about double dating with Sammy Allred one of the Geesinslaw Brothers or maybe going to the first Willie Nelson 4th of July picnic in Dripping Springs or looking out the window in Nashville to see Connie Smith mowing her lawn. She had many wonderful stories of her life in Central Texas and beyond. She had a fun, exciting life with Max. His life work in the music business brought many unique, unusual experiences into her life.
She was also a career woman. She worked at KOKE radio station in Austin—where she met the love of her life Max Prince Gardner. She worked at ad agencies and Club Corp and many other places. She had an impeccable work ethic and worked from the time she was a teenager.
She will always be remembered as an amazing caregiver. After Max had a stroke she showed her great love and patience in caring for him. She was a game player—she loved a game of dominos or cards or anything. She recently was very proud to become a member of DAR.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Max P. Gardner, her former husband, Laurence "Dick" Barr, her son, Gregory Max Gardner, and her brothers—Walter, Truman, Roy, and Johnny Schoen.
She is survived by three sons—Jack Jordan, Steven R. Barr (Lisa) and David S. Gardner (Jennifer). Grandchildren—Shawn Barr, Terrance Barr (Amanda), Mitchell Barr, Robin Barr (Peyton), Grace Gardner, Sophie Gardner and Evan Jordan, as well as 4 great grandchildren—Emmett, Millie, Zoey and Wyatt. Survivors also include a sister Dorothy Daniel, 3 sisters-in-law Ruby, Verlene and Becky Schoen and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Doris loved her family and friends. They were her world.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 11, 2022, at 3 p.m. at Mission Park Funeral Chapel, 3401 Cherry Ridge Drive, San Antonio, Texas (210/349-1414).
