Despondent from financial troubles, and failing in health, O. Fred Fish, a real estate dealer of Portland, shot and killed himself at his residence, 415 Mill street, yesterday.
Mr. Fish and his wife were just about to go out for a walk. As they were leaving the bedroom he slipped a revolver into his pocket, but when his wife remonstrated he returned it to the dresser. His wife went into the bathroom for a moment, and while she was gone he fired a single fatal shot. Two hours later he died at the Good Samaritan Hospital.
The bullet entered behind the right eye and came out above the left eye. Dr. Edward H. Anthony was summoned. Mr. Fish never regained consciousness. His wife is prostrated because of his death. The health of Mr. Fish had been failing rapidly the last eight months, due to overwork.
Mr. Fish was a Mason, a Knight of Pythias, a Shriner and an Oddfellow. For many years he was Master Mason in his home lodge at DeLand, Florida. He also served one year as mayor of that city, and was for nine years a member of the City Council there.
For many years Mr. Fish was an engineer on the Big Four road out of Cleveland. Later he had full charge of the shops at DeLand, Florida. He came to Portland seven years ago and opened the Hawthorne Realty Company on the East Side. Last November he opened offices in the Selling building.
Besides his widow Mr. Fish is survived by a daughter, Mrs. C. H. Willison, of Ashland, and a son, C. D. Fish, of Jacksonville, Florida. He also is survived by two brothers and three sisters.
