A memorial service for Douglas George Birdsall, 53, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday on the Third Floor of the Texas Tech Library.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.
He died on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001.
He was born on July 1, 1947, in Wyandotte, Mich., and graduated from high school in Kalamazoo, Mich. He married Francia Fitch in 1972.
He held a bachelor's in English from the University of Michigan, a master's in English from Central Michigan University and a master's in library science from the University of Michigan. In 1994, he earned a doctorate in higher education from Tech.
He was associate dean of libraries at Tech since moving to Lubbock in 1989. Previously, he was assistant director of libraries at North Dakota State University in Fargo and humanities and fine arts librarian at Idaho State University in Pocatello.
He was active in Lubbock cultural events and had served as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and the South Plains Food Bank.
Survivors include a daughter, Emily of Boston; a son, Nathaniel of Yale University; his mother, Kathleen Birdsall of Wildwood, Fla.; three brothers, Roger and Bird of Tracy, Calif., and Gordon of Richland, Mich.
The family suggests memorials to the Douglas Birdsall Memorial Library Fund, in care of TTU Library, Lubbock 79409.
