John was born in Decatur, MI, the son of Jacob Hoogland and Anna Schuurmans. His father was a minister in the Christian Reformed Church, so he grew up in a variety of places in both the U.S. and Canada. John is a graduate of Calvin College (A.B.) and Seminary (B.D.) and ordained in the Christian Reformed Church at his home church in Grand Rapids, Neland Ave, CRC. He has a Master of Arts degree from both the University of Michigan (English) and the University of Wisconsin (Journalism) and a Doctorate in Education from Temple University. Chaplain Hoogland entered the Army from his home in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army for 30 years. In addition to completing the U.S. Army Chaplain School Basic and Advanced Courses, he is a graduate of both the Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College. Among his military decorations and awards are the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the Army Staff Badge.
John served with the 82nd Engineer Battalion (Combat), Fort Leonard Wood, MO; the 3rd Armored Division, Kitzingen, Germany; the 4th Basic Training Regiment, Fort Dix, NJ; the 7th Vietnamese Infantry Division (MAC-V), Vietnam; the 1st Armored Division, Fort Hood, TX; and seventh Corps, Stuttgart, Germany.
Additionally, he served as the Post Chaplain at Fort Monmouth, NJ; Director of Army Personnel for the Army Chaplaincy, Office of the Chief of Chaplains, the Pentagon; President of the Army Chaplain Board, Fort Meade, Maryland and later at Fort Monmouth, NJ; Director of Military Ministries, U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School, Fort Monmouth, NJ. Following his Army retirement, John became pastor at the Midland Park Christian Reformed Church, Midland Park, NJ, and later at Seabrook Retirement Community, Tinton Falls, NJ.
Funeral Services will be held at Zaagman Memorial Chapel on Monday, September 12, at 11:00 AM, with one hour of visitation before beginning at 10:00. Lunch reception to follow. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in John's honor to Christian Reformed Chaplaincy and Care.
