Rodney was born November 16, 1943 in Jackson, Michigan to Glen A. and Margaret L. (Gyles) Horton. He moved to Homer when he was seven. He graduated in 1961 from Homer High School, where he was very active in FFA. Rodney won a District Plowing Contest in 1960. He was an FFA Star Farmer in 1961. He was a champion beef showman at the Calhoun County Fair during his younger years. He was born a farmer and first planted corn in his sandbox. He started his custom farming business before graduating.

On June 20, 1964, Rodney married Mary Howard of Homer. They moved to Tekonsha in 1964 after buying his first 200-acre farm. He was the leader of modern farmers, always on the cutting edge of new farming practices and technology. Farming was Rodney's life-long profession, although he had some time for hobbies – snowmobiling and four-wheeling, riding his Harley, tractor pulling, and lastly semi-truck pulling. Doing all these things with his grandchildren was the joy of his life.

Rodney is lovingly remembered by his family: his wife, Mary; children: Stephanie (Tim) Ledbetter of Ottawa, IL, Shannon (David) Pearce of Livonia, and Robert (Hope) Horton, Marshall; grandchildren: Ashley (Zachary) Pessia of Kalamazoo, Nickolas (Danielle) Pearce of Tekonsha, Lauren Pearce of Grand Rapids, Annelise Pearce of Livonia, and Sara and Lisa Horton of Marshall; brother, Roger Horton of Homer; cousin, Don (Gayle) Horton of Georgia; and life-long friend, Larry Robinson of Marshall. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughters.

Rodney was raised in the Catholic faith and his belief in Christ was always important to him. He expressed to his cousin before his failing health that he had done everything he ever wanted to do and had lived a blessed life. He flew away to his forever home where joy will never end on the glad morning of Tuesday, August 23, 2022. We believe he is there now planning where he can plant corn again!

Memorials may be given to the Homer FFA Chapter, 403 S. Hillsdale Street, Homer, MI 49245 or to the Calhoun County Yesteryear Association, c/o Tamy Woodward, 4820 Mann Road, Concord, MI 49237 for the annual tractor cancer drive that benefits the Marshall Fountain Clinic and the Bronson Battle Creek Cancer Center.
