Alec Paul Graves, 31, of Wilmington, N.C. sadly passed away at his parents' home on Tuesday, August 23rd, 2022. Alec will be remembered for his perpetual smile, sense of adventure, love of sports, love of photography and how much he valued friends and family. He was inherently kind and giving and it was a soothing comfort to be in his presence.
Alec was a gifted athlete who developed a love of baseball while living in Baltimore when his team made it to the NABF World Classic Baseball Tournament. In the hotly contested Uncles vs. Cousins Fitzgerald basketball games, ages ranging 7 to 75, Alec's style could best be described as "kamikaze." A surprising move and usually a winning shot unique to Alec's approach to life.
He then developed a passion for surfing that carried him from the east coast shores of Wrightsville Beach to Assateague, and eventually to the Oregon coast where he has been living for the past several years, surfing every cove that had a good break. He loved the Redwood forests, hiking, camping, and a love for the great outdoors. He loved the Chetco and the Winchuck Rivers especially. He was fortunate to have opportunities to follow the surf swells in Central America and Hawaii a few times also.
He had a natural culinary gift and we enjoyed many of his intuitive creations. He and his partner at the time, Lia, opened a restaurant together in Brookings, Oregon. He spent his time with close friends including Lia, her son Nolan and her daughter Naya.
Alec was born December 20th, 1990 to the late George Dickerson Graves (8/8/59-8/2/2012) and Shawn Fitzgerald Best. He was greatly loved by his stepmother, Ginnie Kuhn, and his stepfather, Richard Harrison Best. He graduated from Hoggard High School in Wilmington, N.C. and continued his studies at UNC-Wilmington and Oregon State University where he studied engineering.
Alec is survived by his mother, Shawn Best and stepfather Richard Best, his older sister Kendall LaBruyere, her husband John Thomas LaBruyere, his niece Lydia Catherine and nephew Aiden George, stepmother Ginnie Kuhn and Ginnie's daughter Erica Filidoro and her family.
On the maternal Fitzgerald side, his family includes his grandfather Paul Fitzgerald(deceased) and his wife Dolores, his grandmother Kay Fitzgerald (deceased), Uncle Patrick and wife Eileen, his Uncle Michael and wife Kathy (deceased), his Uncle Bryan (deceased) and wife Elizabeth and their families.
On the paternal Graves side, his family includes grandparents, Preston and Alma Graves (deceased), uncle, Preston, II (deceased) and wife Nancy, Annabel and Griffin Ratley, Jim and wife Sharon Vanderslice, Uncle John and wife Christy, and Uncle Mark and wife Becky and their families.
He inherited the Best family when Rick and Shawn married in 2004; Rick's parents Edward (deceased) and wife Betty Best (Big Nanny), brother Eddie and his wife Elizabeth, brother Dr. Ken and his wife Dr. Emma, and Rick's sister Susan and husband Rick Stone and their families; and the LaBruyere family when his sister married John Thomas (JT) LaBruyere, JT's father Tim and his wife Kim and JT's mother Cathy and sister Rachel.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 29, at Basilica of St. Mary, 412 Ann Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.
