John "Jack" Buckley Whelan
August 12, 1934 - August 23, 2022

On Tuesday, August 23, 2022, of Silver Spring, MD.

A loving and devoted husband for 67 years to Ann Whelan; father of Theresa Tranter (Neil), John Jr. (Linda), Tom, Paul (Lori) and Dan (Adrianne) Whelan. Very proud grandfather of Brian Tranter, Kyle Tranter, Meghan Smoot, Eileen Biss, Maureen Farnin, John Whelan III, Kelly Whelan, Colin Whelan and Anna Whelan; great grandfather of Kinley, Reese and Charlie Tranter, Charlie Biss, Rowan Smoot and soon to be Baby Farnin. Brother of Patricia Miller and the late Mary Catherine Justice, Jude Daly Seamone and Honora "Sweetsie" Armentrout.

He was a talented craftsman, sports enthusiast, and avid fisherman. For over forty years he toiled in the roofing and sheet metal business; first as a tradesman and then as a contractor. He worked hard, until he didn't have to. Baseball may have been his favorite sport. He was a proud supporter of the Senators and then the Senators and finally the Orioles. For over 50 years he was a season ticket holder of the Washington Redskins until that became unbearable. Being on the water, fishing, was his happy place.

Most of all, he was a loving husband who cared greatly for his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Cross Church, 4900 Strathmore Avenue, Garrett Park, MD, on Tuesday, October 4, at 10:30 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to Montgomery Hospice, 1355 Piccard Dr., Suite 100, Rockville, MD 20850.
