Nellie Mae Williams-Simmons, passed away on June 21, 2022 at JRMC.

She was born on April 11, 1942 in Winchester, Arkansas.

Nellie received her early education from Packingtown Elementary and graduated from Merrill High School in 1959. She had great work ethics. She began her employment venture at Brown Manufacturing Company, and from there she became certified as a preschool teacher. She worked for the Jefferson Comprehensive Headstart Program for over 30 years, retiring from this position with an excellent work history.

Being raised in a Christian home, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was baptized at 12 years of age at Old Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. She remained an active member of the church until her health began to fail. She was a Mother of the church, an active participant in the yearly Vacation Bible Schools, and a dutiful member of the weekly Bible Study session at the church. She continued to conduct Bible Studies at Whispering Knoll Assisted Living Community.

Nellie Mae loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She especially enjoyed fishing and making quilts. To know her was to love her. She married Willie D. Gilbert, and to that union two sons were born. She later was united in matrimony to Arthur Lee Simmons, Sr. Both preceded her in death.

She was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Williams, Sr. and Mable Degraffenreed-Williams; one brother, Alfred "Bill" Williams, Jr; and two sisters, Ollie Mae Williams and Evelyn "Lena" Williams-Dorn.

Nellie Mae is survived by two sons, Gary Gilbert (Valerie) of Pine Bluff, AR and David Gilbert of Chula Vista, CA; one daughter, Becky Williams (Polly); three grandsons; one granddaughter; two great-grandsons; two aunts, Earnestine Scott and Hattie Ridgle; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
