Born September 12, 1945, in Warrington, England, he was the son of John Henry Montgomery and Elsie Simpson Montgomery. He attended Poughkeepsie High School.
After high school, John proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
A Correctional Officer at the Dutchess County Jail for over 25 years, John retired in 2009.
John loved playing golf and was a member of the Thursday night golf league at College Hill Golf Course in Poughkeepsie. He also enjoyed camping, spending time outdoors, and fishing with his grandson.
A "people person," John enjoyed spending time with others, especially his family. He was known for his quick wit and humor.
In 1977, in Poughkeepsie, he married the former Barbara Coon. Mrs. Montgomery survives at home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, Debra (Brian) Robertson, Marie (Steve) Osarczuk, and Anthony (Melissa) Montgomery; four grandchildren, Kaileigh, Tucker, Cain, and Shea; and one great-grandson.
He is also survived by his two sisters, Patricia (Gary) Hegeman, and Deborah Rizzotto; brother, Michael (Lisa) Montgomery; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two nephews, John Rizzotto and Ryan Donaruma.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 PM, Tuesday, September 6th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Route 9, Hyde Park.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation will follow.
