SOUTH BEND - Maurice E. Battles, 77, residing in South Bend, passed away at 5:27 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2008, in Our Lady of Peace Hospital, South Bend. He was born August 29, 1930, in South Bend, to the late George and Dorothy (Maurice) Battles, and had lived in South Bend all of his life. On June 26, 1954, in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, he was united in marriage to Patricia L. Robery. His loving wife, Patricia of 53 years, survives him. Also surviving are his son, Maurice E. Battles Jr., and his wife, Sara of South Bend; two grandsons, Preston and Dustin Battles; his sister, Joan (Tom) Barth of Granger; and his two brothers, Merle (Yaunita) Battles of Spring Hill, FL, and George (Marilyn) Battles of Indianapolis, IN; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews. Mr. Battles retired in 1993 from the University of Notre Dame, Sound & Lighting Dept. at the Joyce Athletic & Convocation Center. He was a longtime member of St. Jude Catholic Church and a retired member of the Centre Township Volunteer Fire Dept. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He built his own home, enjoyed his tractors, fishing, and playing cards. He also enjoyed Notre Dame football. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 2, in St. Jude Catholic Church, 19704 Johnson Road, South Bend. Entombment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, where military rites will be conducted. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. today, Feb. 1, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m., and a service by the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Contributions in memory of Mr. Battles may be made to the Centre Township Volunteer Fire Dept., 19971 Kern Road, South Bend, IN 46614.
