"Dolores Margaret Garland
MISSOULA- Dolores Margaret Garland, 83, of Missoula, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at home of cancer.

She was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Milwaukee, to Joseph and Rose Starck, the youngest of four siblings. She graduated from high school and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944 and was honorably discharged in April of 1946.

While stationed in Washington, D.C., she met the love of her life, Robert Bernard Garland.

On May 11 , 1946, she and Bob were married in Milwaukee and started their family the following year. In 1949, they moved to Missoula and raised their family.

A homemaker for most of the child-rearing years, later she worked with Missoula Human Resources and Head Start Programs.

In 1978, Dolores and Bob retired to Moses Lake, Wash. She returned to Missoula in 1997, and has resided at Missoula Manor.

She participated in the foster grandparents programs and worked for the Missoula Aging Service in various capacities until the time of her death.

Dolores was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church.

Her hobbies included knitting, card playing and watching her beloved Packers play football in the fall.

Dolores coordinated the knitted cap and mitten programs that provided Head Start children with winter warmth.

A devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, she took great pride in treating all people with dignity and respect.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Al and Joe; sister Rose; and her husband Bob.

Survivors include son Mike (Joan); daughter Jennie Ward; sons Thomas (Kassie); Robert (Paula); Tim (DeEtta); Jim, daughter Carol Halvorson (Don); grandchildren Kandi, Tracy, Mike Jr., Matthew, Daniel, Peter, Galena, Maxwell, Joseph, Andrew, Emily, Elizabeth, Nicole and Allison; and great-grandchildren, Zachary, Crystal, Hunter, Joseph and Amber.

There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at Missoula Manor, 909 W. Central, followed by a reception.

Interment will be done this summer in Moses Lake, Wash.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Seagrave and his staff, Partners Hospice, Nightingale Nursing, Missoula Manor and many friends that have been so very supportive to us during this time. We thank you all.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Missoula Partners Hospice, Missoula Cancer Society or the Missoula Manor Endowment Fund."
