He was born on Feb. 27, 1923, in Tuscumbia, Ala., and attended schools in Alabama. His parents were the late John Ivy and Leaner Crittendent Whitfield.
He had previously worked for P&R in Flora and Delphi, Capehart and Sayco in Flora, and Alloy Craft in Delphi. He most recently had worked at Custom Alloy in Delphi. He also owned and operated Whitfield Simonize in Camden for a number of years.
On Sept. 6, 1958, in Camden, he married Mary Bernice McDowell-Lantz, and she survives.
Mr. Whitfield was a member of Camden First Baptist Church and the Camden Lions Club. His hobbies included bird-watching, gardening and music.
Surviving with his wife are three sons, Everett Gene Whitfield Sr. of Wentzville, Mo., John D. Whitfield (wife: Karen) of Bringhurst and Frank D. Whitfield (wife: Shanell) of Camden; and a daughter, Mary F. Stilson (husband: Bob) of West Lafayette.
Visitation will be3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Cree Funeral Home, Camden. Service 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, at Camden First Baptist Church, Pastor Paul Marcellino officiating. Interment Camden Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 255 E. Main St., Camden, IN 46923, or Camden Lions Club. He enjoyed his family, including 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family. Preceded in death by a son, Mark, a grandson, an infant grandson, 4 sisters and 3 brothers.
