Portuguese politician. Prime Minister of Portugal and Deputy Prime Minister of Portugal. Mota Pinto was a jurist and a professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra, where he graduated and received his doctorate in legal sciences in 1970. After April 25, 1974, Mota Pinto helped to found the Partido Popular Democrático (PPD), currently the Social Democratic Party (PPD/PSD), thus adhering to the project of Francisco Sá Carneiro, Francisco Pinto Balsemão, and Joaquim Magalhães Mota to create a social democratic political party in Portugal. For the same party, Mota Pinto was elected deputy to the Constituent Assembly and then to the Assembly of the Republic, where he was president of the Party's Parliamentary Group.
He broke with Sá Carneiro at the Party Congress in Aveiro in December 1975 and later reconciled with him and the party. At the time of Sá Carneiro's death, he was the national representative of the presidential candidacy of the AD candidate, General Soares Carneiro.He was also Minister of Commerce and Tourism in the First Constitutional Government.
He was appointed on the presidential initiative of President Ramalho Eanes, the 152nd Prime Minister of the IV Constitutional Government, from November 22, 1978, to August 1, 1979. Having subsequently become President of the PPD/PSD Party. Between 1984 to1985, having formed with the Socialist Party (PS) of Mário Soares, a government that became known as "The Central-Bloc" having been Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, from June 9, 1983, to December 15, February 1985.
He ran again for the presidency of the Party but died suddenly at the age of 48, a few days before the Party Congress.
