Civil War Confederate Officer. James Franklin Hart was a native of Union County, South Carolina. He graduated in 1857 from the South Carolina Military Academy (The Citadel) in Charleston, South Carolina, and was teaching in Union before the onset of the American Civil War in 1861. With prior service as a lieutenant in the engineer branch of the South Carolina military, he was commissioned a lieutenant into Company A, Artillery Battalion, Hampton Legion on or about June 15, 1861. Hart was elected Captain during the reorganization of 1862, and would command the battery when it became detached from the Hampton Legion in July of 1862. Now more of an independent command, the battery became known as Captain James F. Hart's Company, Battalion Horse Artillery, or "Hart's Battery". His famous battery saw action in nearly 150 battles and skirmishes. At the October 27, 1864 battle at Burgess' Mill, Virginia, Captain Hart fell with a dangerous wound to his leg. This injury was found so severe that it was determine that amputation was necessary. Consequently, after losing his leg to the surgeon's knife, his service for the Confederacy came to an end. Nonetheless, he was confirmed Major on March 1, 1865 to date from February 18, 1865. In the post-war years, he started life afresh first as a teacher then as a lawyer in Yorkville, South Carolina (present day York, SC). He also would represent his district as a South Carolina legislator in Columbia, South Carolina (1882-1884). He was the husband of the former Margaret Jane Ratchford.
