James M. (Jim) Richardson
October 17, 1956 - July 5, 2022

Colbert, Georgia - James Minter (Jim) Richardson, 65, died unexpectedly on July 5, 2022 due to complications from injuries he received in an automobile accident in which he was involved on April 23, 2022 near Helen, Georgia.

Jim was born in Columbus, Georgia to Jere Minter and Jeannette Jones Richardson. He grew up in Columbus and attended Hardaway High School and Columbus College, where he gained an interest in metalworking. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Art in 1978 and began working in the commercial jewelry industry. He apprenticed to artisan blacksmith Ivan Bailey in Savannah the early 80s, where he furthered his metalworking skills.

Throughout the 1980s, his interest led him to study with a series of modern masters and innovators in the jewelry and blacksmithing fields. In the early 1990s, Jim relocated to Athens, GA and attended the University of Georgia where he received a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Jewelry and Metalsmithing in 1995.

Jim continued working in the jewelry business in the Athens area while also making custom jewelry for private clients and having occasional shows. He easily settled into the thriving local music and arts scene, weaving an infinite circle of friends and admirers. He began attending metalworking conferences and leading workshops, where he developed a love for teaching. He became a regular guest instructor at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC and the William Holland School of Arts in Young Harris, GA. He continued developing his instructional skills while teaching metal working to many students. Jim's love of teaching reflects clearly in the work of his students. His innovative teaching style, wealth of knowledge and enthusiastic approach made his classes fun and richly informative.

Jim had a lifelong interest in music and began playing mandolin by ear in the 70s. He continued developing his musical skills and added guitar and fiddle to his instrumental repertoire. He became a fixture in the Athens acoustic music community and performed with several bands. Jim had a sophisticated sense of humor, and his boundless creativity was streaked with hilarity. He was a natural entertainer with a quick wit, whether he was performing on stage, teaching a class or conversing one-on-one. He was often the last man standing at jam session campfires as he fiddled away in the predawn light amid fading smoke & smoldering coals

He is survived by his brothers John W. Richardson of Kennesaw, GA, and Jere C. (Jay) Richardson and wife Cathy of Lake Jackson, TX, aunt Sylvia Richardson of Atlanta, GA, niece Rachel Richardson, nephews Lucas Richardson (Annalisa) and Nathan Richardson (Taylor Cameron) and many cousins and great nephews.

A celebration of life will be at 4:00 â€" 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 4, 2022, at LiveWireAthens 227 West Dougherty Street Athens, GA.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Jim Richardson Memorial Scholarship Fund at the William Holland Retreat at https://whr.betterworld.org/ .
