Alice Horner's note:

I am not closely related to this person, and these comments are based on my research.

I don't actually have a full date of birth for her; the November 1888 date is from her listing on the 1900 US Federal Census for Cedarville, Buckeye Township, Stephenson County, Illinois. Obviously her name is nearly identical to the name of her sister, Florence M. Addams, who died in 1890 and is buried at Cedarville and there is a tombstone with fairly legible dates of birth and death carved on it. The online trees only show this deceased sister. Her mother Margaret J. (Bruce) Addams' obituary, from the September 11, 1911 edition of the Freeport Daily Bulletin, only recently added to Newspapers.com by the kind volunteers at the Frances Woodhouse Historical Room of the Freeport Public Library, shows that Margaret J. Addams was survived by two children, one of them Miss Flora Addams, who had been living at home with her at 3 Elk Street, in Freeport. So Flora and Florence Addams are separate people.

I'm thinking Florence and Flora were twins, and that Flora might have originally been named something else, but they changed her name to Flora after Florence died. In that era, parents of dead children often named the next child after the dead child, but then Flora Holmes would have had to have been born in 1890 or slightly later. That seems unlikely in Flora's case because her obituary doesn't provide her date of birth; it only states that she was 76 years old when she died in1965, which is closer to an 1887 or 1888 birthday than to an 1890 or 1891 birthday. She had no social security number.

Flora Holmes obituary does not name her parents or any siblings. Her father's obituary just says he is survived by his children, but doesn't name them. It says "His wife and a family of children survive him." Her mother's obituary, under the name Mrs. Margaret J. Addams, states that she was survived by a son, Charles Addams and a daughter Miss Flora Addams.

It doesn't name any children who preceded her in death. The only proof I could find is her listing in the 1900 US Federal Census for Cedarville, Buckeye Township, Stephenson County, Illinois, which shows Margaret Addams, a widow as head of household, and her two children Charles and Flora M, a nephew and some other relatives living together. It shows Margaret Addams had 3 children, only two of whom were living. Proof for me anyway that she had another child who had died before June 1900, when the census was taken.
