Esther Ruth Bender passed away on August 14 at the age of 99. Born Esther Ruth Ziemann in 1923 to Frederick and Mathilda (Hintz) Ziemann outside of Lodi, where the family farmed 30 acres of grapes. She attended Lafayette Grammar School on Hwy 12 and graduated from Lodi Union High in 1941. She worked at several jobs after graduation, including the Pacific Telephone Co, Star Cleaners and Yosemite Nat'l Park.
She married Raymond Clyde Bender in 1948 at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Lodi. She and Ray raised 3 sons, Randall, Frederick, and Douglas. She was active with the Boy Scout troop #295 as a den mother, along with her husband who was scoutmaster. She was a member and taught Sunday School at Zion Reformed Church for many years. She worked as the weigh master for local wineries and was a growers acct clerk for Guild Wines from 1963-76. After retiring she was very active in the Lodi Garden Club, San Joaquin Historical Museum, Lodi Historical docent at Hill House and was a member and served as president of the American Legion Post #22 Auxiliary. She loved to play Mrs. Claus at the Loel Senior Center. She rejoined Emanuel Lutheran Church in later years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond in 1995.
She is survived by her children: Randall (Donna) of Lodi, CA, Frederick (Cindy) of Bremerton, WA, and Douglas (Yvette) of Mnt Ranch, CA. Grandchildren: Chris Bender (Sandy), David Bender (Jayme), Jed Bender (Tawny), Maggie Erickson (Sean), John Bender (Victoria), Dustin Bender, Shelby Bender, and eleven great grand children.
Graveside service will be August 30th at 9:30am. Cherokee Memorial Cemetery, 14165 N Beckman Rd., Harney at Highway 99, Lodi, CA.
