Robert Stephen Davenport passed away peacefully in his home on August 14, 2022. Steve was born March 19, 1941, to loving parents Robert and Shirley Davenport of Walla Walla, Washington. Steve loved growing up in Walla Walla and often visited his childhood home in his adulthood. As a youth he enjoyed sports, especially baseball and basketball, and learned to play the violin. He grew up a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a devoted member throughout his life. In 1961, he was called to serve a mission in Chile for two and a half years.
Steve met his sweetheart, Neva Gardner, in 1964 while she was living with her sister, Faye, in Walla Walla. They fell in love and were married in March of 1965 in the Idaho Falls Temple. Steve earned his bachelor's degree from BYU in psychology and later a master's degree from the University of Utah in social work, during which time two daughters joined the family. Upon graduation the family moved to California where Steve began his career as a social worker and two more sons were born. A job offer then took the family to Washington in 1972 and an additional two sons joined the family. In 1978, a job with the State of Idaho as a clinical social worker brought the family to Meridian, Idaho where the family settled.
One of Steve's hobbies was thrift store shopping to collect books and other treasures. He always had a gift in hand when the children and later grandchildren visited. His grandchildren remember him taking them to the Meridian swimming pool, McDonalds or dollar store and the countless bikes, toys, shirts, jewelry, or money they were given by him.
Steve loved people and never knew a stranger. He served in many ward and stake callings in the church including Bishop of the Meridian 12th ward. Perhaps his favorite calling was that of scout master. He loved scouting and attended Wood Badge and Philmont. He expressed many times his regret at only receiving his Life rank advancement as a boy. He inspired his sons to receive their Eagle Scout rank along with many of his grandsons. He taught them to love the outdoors and their country.
Steve retired in 2005 and in 2010 served an eighteen-month mission with Neva in Madrid, Spain where he was able to use the Spanish language once again, which he had grown to love.
He taught his family to trust in the Lord and look to Him for their blessings. We will miss his generosity, kindness, and devotion to the Lord.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Shirley Davenport, a brother, Mark and sister, Julie Nicolayson. He is survived by his wife, Neva Davenport; six children Lisa (Dave) Koller, Sheri (Steve) Christensen, Greg (Debbie), Paul (Patrice), Kirk (Tarah) and David (Christy); twenty-seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Kathy, Debbie, and Joan; and two brothers, Craig and Kevin; and numerous extended family members.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 26 at the LDS Church, 1985 N Black Cat Rd, Meridian
