Donald Alvin Dykes, 70, of Fleming, GA was called home on August 16, 2022, surrounded by his loved ones while under the care of GHC Hospice.

Don was born November 25, 1951 in Lyons, GA to Otto and Eudine (Cartrette) Dykes. He graduated with the class of 1970 from Bradwell Institute, and attended the University of Florida and Armstrong College. Most of his career was spent as a manager for Dykes Enterprises. However, he spent the last 23 years as a dedicated bus driver for the Liberty County School System. Don was also a faithful member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Fleming.

In May of 1977, Don met the love of his life, Rita Abbott Dykes. They wed on December 10, 1977 in Hinesville, GA. This year, they would have celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary.

Don was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed turkey, deer, and dove hunting, but especially fishing trips with his family and five grandsons. Don was also known as the "Grill Master" for all family gatherings. He was famous for his delicious barbeque ribs. On game days, he could always be found cheering on his beloved Georgia Bulldogs, Atlanta Braves, and Atlanta Falcons…win or lose.

Don was preceded in death by his mother, Eudine Cartrette Dykes, and sister, Wanda Gayle Dykes.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rita Abbott Dykes, their children Leah (Vince) Gumataotao, Ashley (Eric) Dickerson all of Hinesville, GA and Zachary Dykes of Fleming, GA, father Wiley Otto Dykes of Hinesville, GA, brother Byron Dykes of Hinesville, GA and six grandchildren, Matthew Richardson, Carmae, Luke, and Noah Gumataotao, and Jackson and Jude McCullough, sister-in-law, Penny Cox (Rodger) and several nieces and nephews and extended family members.

Visitation with the family will begin at 2:00pm on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home in Flemington, GA. A celebration of life service will follow immediately after visitation at 3:00pm.

Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home, Flemington, is handling arrangements.
