Freta was born in Waco at Providence Hospital on August 6, 1935 to Ford and Edna Wood Dempsey.
She attended Waco High School and lived and worked her whole life in Waco, TX. She received her GED in 1988. Freta loved to cook, bake and loved her family very much. Freta worked at the Western Club and Melody Ranch in the 70's and in the 80's she worked at Steakley Brothers Chevrolet and JD's Wrecker and Woody's Wrecker.
Freta was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Capt. Jack Dempsey, her husband Clayton Smith, sons, Scott Colvin and Robert Byers, and two aunts, Eva Wallace and Eloise Tickle.
Survivors include her children, Steven Byers, daughter-in-law Debbie Byers, Cheryl Byers, Zahna Colvin and Lori St. John. She also has 5 grandchildren, 8 great grand-children and one great-great granddaughter.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society or ASPCA.
