According to a newspaper clipping, George Russel Craig's original name was Joseph Craig. He had an older brother, George Craig, who escaped slavery prior to emancipation. When Joseph Craig also ran away from his slaveholder he decided to use his brother's name {George] thinking it would throw off his pursuers.
