Daughter of Lt James McDowell and wife, Mary Davis McDowell. Soon after the death of James McDowell in 1747 in Lancaster County PA, Mary moved with her children to Mecklenburg County NC.

Margaret married Hugh McEwen in Mecklenburg County NC about 1748.

They were parents of 14 children many of whom died as infants and small children:
