JOHN EDWARD FLAHERTY, 80, of Stonegates, Greenville, died Tuesday of cancer at home. Mr. Flaherty graduated from . Yale University, where he was a national intercollegiate squash racquets champion. After graduating in 1941, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving as a captain. He was the first American ashore in the successful landing at Guadalcanal in 1942, his family said. He was a stockbroker at Dean Witter. He was a member of the Wilmington Country Club, the Bay Head Yacht Club, Gulf Stream Bath and Tennis Club, the Wilmington Club and the Yale Club of New York City. His first wife, Alice du Pont Meeds, is deceased. Survivors: wife, Marilyn Moses Flaherty; son, John E. Flaherty Jr. of Philadelphia; daughters, Alice Long of Wilmington, Ellen Brothers of Kennett Square, Pa., Katherine Flaherty of New York City, Anne Hollyday Flaherty of Boston and Mary Thompson of Alexandria, Va.; 11 grandchildren. Graveside service: 11 a.m. Monday, in the family cemetery, Buck Road, Montchanin. Contributions: Tower Hill School or Friends of Goodstay Gardens.
