He graduated from Urbandale High School in 1960 and attended Drake University where he participated in the ROTC program and Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Missouri, where he was a member of TKE fraternity and Tri-Beta Honor Society.

In 1964, he met Sue Shortley and they married in 1966. Gary was hardworking and talented in his crafts of carpentry and construction. Stewart, Gethman Construction, and Hay Construction in Marshalltown.

His love of fishing is well known and he and his family have spent many great times at their lake cabin in Cohasset, Minnesota. Always up for a game of cribbage or a card game, he thoroughly enjoyed the competition. Attending his grandchildren's sporting events, concerts and plays were at the top of his list. Talking politics, watching the Cyclones, Hawkeyes, and Green Bay Packers were also favorites. In 1972, Gary became a certified scuba diver. When Don and Dave were younger, he coached Little League basketball and baseball.

Surviving are his wife, Sue; sons, Don (Marlo) Willett, of Illinois, and Dave Willett, of Florida; five grandchildren, Peyton, Eli, Austin, Jenna and Coby Willett; three step-grandchildren, Haley (Gavin) Urish, Emilee (Nate) Wenda, and Brooklyn Kesler; his brother, Bob Willett; his sister Janis (Allan) Gurnsey; and many nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Lois.
