John Wright, son of Maj. Francis (1656/9-1713) and Anne Washington Wright (c1661-ante1698), was born between 1682 and 1685, and inherited his father's estate in Cople Parish, Westmoreland County, Va. In 1723 he sold the plantation to Henry Lee who gave him in exchange a 1,000 acre estate located between Powells Run and Nepasco Creek near the Potomac River, Stafford County (now Prince William), Va. He was an attorney, surveyor and justice in Westmoreland County. He married c1703, Dorothy Aubrey (-c1738/9), daughter of Richard and Dorothy Meader (or North) Aubrey. Their son was Francis Wright II (c1704-42).

Lawrence (1602-52) and Amphyllis Twigden Washington (1601-55)(Five Generation Chart. Chevy Chase, Md. 1982); Dr. Justin M. Colonel Nathaniel Pope, c1610-1660, of Virginia, Ancestor of Washington, Governors and Legislators, History of His Descendants (Louisville, Ky. 2018), 30.
Charles Hoppin in his Washington Ancestry, I:394-408, identified a younger son, John Wright (c1700-92). However, Robert Grant in his book concluded and with DNA evidence that John Wright was not a son. Robert N. Grant, The Identification of 1792 John Wright of Fauquier County, Virginia As Not the Son of 1729/30 John Wright of Stafford County, Virginia (Heritage Books, Westminster, Md., 2009). Glenn summarizes the controversy, I: 44-55. The Jamestowne Society says there is insufficient evidence to connect John Wright as a son.
