Douglas McArthur Gill, better known as "Cookie," age 80, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 8, 2022. He was born in Morristown on April 18, 1942, and lived the first half of his life in Jefferson County, near White Pine, on his parents' farm where, despite some mental and physical challenges, he worked hard to do his part. He fed the chickens and gathered their eggs, brought the cows in for milking and then returned them to pasture, drove the tractor at harvest time for hay, straw, corn, tobacco, and more. He mowed his family's yard and earned some money mowing nearby neighbor's yards. He also rode a 3-speed bike all over the country roads and into White Pine, where he became a bit of a celebrity at the drug store and barber shop. After his mother, Lena Hipshire Gill, had to be admitted to a nursing home and then his father, William Clifford Gill, passed away, "Cookie" lived for almost 20 years at Ridgeview Terrace nursing home in Rutledge, TN. After that, he lived in assisted living homes in Maryville and then Bearden, before moving to another assisted living home in East Knoxville, next door to his nephew, Michael Gill, and niece-in-law, Evelyn Gill, who helped look after him for the last 25+ years of his life. "Cookie" was known for his delightful cackling laugh, his tender love of animals, and his admiration of "pretty girls." No one who ever met him could forget him. He will long be remembered and greatly missed.
"Cookie" is survived also by his niece, Gina Gill Lawrence and her husband Tim Lawrence, and a host of cousins and great nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
Viewing by family and friends will be Friday, August 12, from 9AM-5PM, at Farrar Funeral Home, 1806 Main Street, in White Pine, and graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 13, @2:00PM, at Hamblen Memory Gardens, 5421 Andrew Johnson Hwy, in Morristown.
