On August 8, 2022, Betty Hicks James, better known as BJ, passed on to eternal peace after her brave struggle with the nearly intolerable effects of metastatic breast cancer and treatment thereof. She died peacefully at home, in her sleep, as was her wish. She will be enormously missed by her three loving daughters, Linda Campbell, Kim Haboush, and Jan Closter; their husbands Kenny Campbell, Tony Haboush, and Mike Closter; grandchildren Matthew Campbell, Kelsey Campbell Whitaker, Jamie Haboush, Lucas and Libbie Closter; great grandson Carson Campbell; and all the unnamed spouses and significant others, not to mention everyone who ever came to know her. To say she will be missed by her devastated husband of the last 26 plus years, Les Spain, is a grievous unconscionable understatement. With her tenacity, industriousness, and overwhelming love for family, friends, and former business associates she embodied the best of the teachings of her strongly held faith. She was an ever loyal friend and a doting and caring mother, grandmother, and Grandma BJ who set high standards for the kind of behaviors and attitudes that have allowed her children to be the same loving and carry examples to their children that she was to them. Her husband and children stand in awe of her accomplishments as a completed and exemplary human being. A visitation for family and friends will be held at Bliley's Funeral home at 8510 Staples Mill Road, Richmond, VA, 23228, on August 18th, 2022, 6:00pm to 8:00pm, with internment and a graveside service the following day at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Pilots Lane, Richmond, VA, at 1:00 p.m. Those wishing to send flowers should be mindful of BJ's dislike of gladiolas. Those wishing to honor her memory in a way most pleasing to BJ should lift a glass of Chardonnay in her honor. As she would say, "To The Pure Life."
