WM. KOENKE MEETS DEATH BY FRIGHTFUL ACCIDENT WHILE HANDLING TIMBERS
Skull Crushed and Death Was Instantaneous—Was Prosperous Farmer.
William Koenke, respected and prosperous farmer living near Hockaday, met a shocking death Wednesday at about 9 a.m. while helping to unload timbers or long poles from a wagon in his yard. His son had raised the end of one of the big sticks to the top of a wheel and Mr. Koenke was in the rear between the stick and the load trying to shove it over when the end of the wheel fell off, swinging the timber back so it struck Mr. Koenke's head, crushing his skull and killing him instantly. Coroner Wright went out to investigate, but found no occasion for an inquest.
Mr. Koenke owned a fully equipped farm, with good buildings, the land being part of the old Wells-Stone farm. He was not only prosperous but he was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends.
William Koenke was born in Russia, and was 51 years, seven months and one day old. He has been a resident of Butman township 11 years. Gladwin County Record dated 3-6/1919 Column – 7 Page – 1.
William's father was August Koenke and mother was Austina Bartz (according to his death record).
