Eric Joseph Burton, 42, of Wheatfield, passed away unexpectedly on August 3rd, 2022 from a heart attack. He was born July 14, 1980 to Jake and Rebecca Burton (Szemes). Eric graduated from Chesterton High School in 1998, and attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terra Haute, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his father; Jake H. Burton; step-mother, Gloria Burton; his maternal grandparents, Joseph and Isabelle Szemes; Uncle Jerrry Szemes; and his best kitty Bear.

Eric is survived by his mom, Rebecca Szemes; his much loved stepson, Christopher; his sister and best friend Amanda; parents-in-law, Jim and Kay Brown; Uncles Mike and John Szemes; cousins, Jason (Tara) Szemes, Michelle and Miranda Szemes. Eric had many wonderful friends including, but certainly not limited to, David, Justin, Gregg, Matt and Molly, Ryan and Kathlene, Andrew and Susan, and Murphy and Lisbeth.

Those of us lucky enough to have had Eric in our lives know that the world has lost someone truly remarkable. Even as a child, his amazing mind was evident in the things he created and built and the way he explored the world. He loved computers and technology, and eventually made his living working with them. He earned many advanced certifications in his field and was continually seeking new knowledge.

Eric could learn anything- how to change a transmission, to pick locks, cook gourmet food, operate ham radios- anything that interested him, he could master. Brilliant and genius are overused words, but they definitely applied to Eric. He qualified for MENSA, and once he convinced his sister Amanda to join, they delighted in reminding each other of their supposed mental prowess whenever they did something really stupid. That sense of humor was one of his best qualities, ranging from dark and twisty to cheesy dad jokes- laughing with Eric was a given.

Eric was a giant of a man, not only in stature but in the size of his heart and capacity to help others. Eric knew what it meant to struggle and overcome, and he was committed to helping people however he could- with computers, car repairs, homework, emotional support, or anything else in his power to give. He was a man of strong convictions and would not hesitate to take a stand for what he knew to be right. Eric was both a force of nature and a safe harbor.

Eric will be cremated following a small, private viewing. A 'Celebration of Eric" will be held in the near future, and the family will share arrangements when they are finalized.

All will be welcome to attend.

To honor Eric, please be mindful of your heart health no matter your age.
