Brief mention of the Abee sisters' deaths is made in the June 1886 edition of the Morganton Star:

"In the same neighborhood the following families have lost children: P.M. Warlick 2, Amos Stillwell 1, Phillip Burns 1, William Matthews 1, William Rhoney 1, Jacob Abee, 2.

An earlier mention was made in the same newspaper:

"The flux is raging at and around Mr. L.F. Warlick's. Already a large number of children have died. So far the disease has baffled the skill of the doctors."

(Note: flux is a form of intestinal inflammation)
