The Lord mercifully called our Ortega patriarch home on July 18, 2022. Jose Partida slipped peacefully into the night surrounded in faithful prayer, favored music, and loving sentiments expressed by his devoted wife of over 60 years, Juana, children, Martina, Elva, Jose Jr., Adan, and his adoring grandchildren and close family.

Jose's story begins in Jamay, Jalisco Mexico, born February 18, 1939, the third eldest son to a seasoned cattle rancher and his young wife. Jose grew up with 8 brothers and sisters in the small town where he would eventually become well known as vaquero Chaparro, running the family's dairy ranch at the tender age of 11, after the passing of his father. He was a born leader, provider, and protector. Through his grit, hard work ethic, and courage he became the fledgling head of the household, often sleeping outside in total darkness, far from home, to guard his cattle. As Chaparro grew into a strapping young and handsome buck, he found a passion in horseback riding and rodeos. He proudly shared stories about his bull riding experiences and championships. It was on one of his trusty stallions, prancing around town, that he caught the eye of his future soulmate. Before too long, he would get the chance to woo her with his baby blue eyes and gentlemanly ways as she visited the dairy, running errands for her family. He always said that it was her tender beauty and mariposa shaped lips that drew him to Juana. But it was her special soul, devotion, and loving spirit that undoubtedly sealed her heart to his forever. They married in their hometown parish, setting down roots and extending a new branch to the Ortega family.

As an ambitious young man, Jose leveraged the opportunity of the US Bracero program, left the pueblito he had known for all his 19 years to pursue efforts that would better enable him to provide for his growing family. He worked in various places before settling in California's Valle Imperial. Naturally, his experience and skills first landed him a position as a dairy farmer for 8 years. Jose then moved into agriculture, working his way up from harvester, equipment maintenance, and driver, tiller, to sembrador over the next 40 years, turning down offers to be the foreman. Jose and Juana were the king and queen of their backyard garden oasis, which was rich with fruits, vibrant colors, and sheltering shade, even winning an award for their beautiful yard from a local committee. Jose's knowledge of cultivation, farming, and ranching earned him the confidence and esteem of many workers and ranchers in the area.

Although, ranching and agriculture played a large role in Jose's life, he would have most assuredly earned a career as a talented and dependable accountant had he been able to continue his education beyond the third grade. He had a knack for calculations, meticulous record keeping and delighted in organization and order. Jose was a smart, trustworthy businessman with impressive financial management skills. His family has long been in awe of his keen accounting practices, disciplined habits, and goal dedication.

After Jose and Juana set down new family roots in Westmorland, CA, they would grow their family of two into six and welcome other family members from Jamay to flourish in the same Westmorland pueblito. Jose was an incredibly hard-working man, laboring 10-hour days, 6 days a week for most of his life, never permitting his family to go without and still finding time to take annual family vacations to Sea World, San Diego beaches, and the Zoo. Jose was an exceptionally devoted family man. Though frugal with his money, he enjoyed quality things; compra barato, compra cada rato. Jose spared no expense on ensuring his family ate fresh, well, and healthily. Carne asadas were one of his very favorite traditions to celebrate a meal. On Sunday gatherings, you could find him muy catrin y bien perfumado, breaking out his dance moves to Perez Prado, cumbias, and ranchera music. His joy was always reflected in his huge pearly smile that lit up his guapo face and his gentle sapphire eyes. His happiness was infectious. Jose was generous and kind with a true servant of God heart, leading his family in nightly prayers and never letting them leave him without a blessing. He knew how to fascinate you with his childhood stories, chistes, carefully considered beliefs, wealth of knowledge, card tricks, and charming pranks. Jose was a fun jokester, aimed at getting you to laugh or learn something. You could not help but fondly treasure the moments you spent in his presence. A rare and extraordinary gem of a man.

Jose's passing was preceded by his father, Zacarias, mother, Rosa, two brothers, Luis and Jesus, all of whom he dearly loved and missed.

He is survived by his wife, Juana; daughter, Martina and Marcelino Burciaga; daughter, Elva and Juan Suarez; son, Jose Jr. and Veronica Ortega; son, Adan and Teresa Ortega; precious grandchildren, Adam, Chris, Erik, Salma, Carlo, Melody, Adrienne, Brennan, Camrynn, Giselle, and Elianna; sisters, Nina, Luz, Marina, Leticia; brothers, Zacarias and Francisco; sisters and brother-in-laws; many nieces, nephews, godchildren, and cousins; and of course all the special friends he worked with and cherished over the years.

Lo queremos muncho, muncho! Jose will be so dearly missed as his legacy lives on with all those who fondly remember and honor him. Our viejo, apa, abuelito imprinted our lives with his work ethic, strength, perseverance, and familial devotion, leaving an inheritance of love, hope, and everlasting faith.

Services: St. Margaret Mary Church in Brawley on Monday, August 1, 2022. The Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. and Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Immediately following mass, Jose will be lovingly laid to eternal rest at Riverview Cemetery, 4700 Hovley Road in Brawley, CA.
