IN Memory of Johanna: Devoted Worker, Mother and Muse.

Beloved mother, partner and community presence Johanna Theresa Beck, (née Altieri) 77, passed away peacefully at her Alder Street home in Scranton on Friday, Dec. 24, 2021. Johanna was born May 27, 1944, in Manhattan, N.Y., to Frank and Frances Altieri, and was raised in the Bronx, N.Y. and Carteret, N.J. She graduated from Carteret High School, studied modeling at the Barbizon school and psychology courses at Morris County College.

After pursuing a career in modeling, in 1965 the intelligent and vivacious Johanna landed a position with Albert Grossman's management firm at CBS records as personal assistant to artists such as Richie Havens, Peter Paul and Mary, Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan. It was during her tenure at CBS that Dylan penned "Visions of Johanna," a widely regarded rock and roll masterpiece.

After leaving CBS in 1969 to start a family, Johanna had several notable jobs. In the 1970s, she was the first woman employed in the lumber department at Rickels Home Center in Ledgewood, N.J. From 1990 to 1996, she was a principal clerk for the parole bureau at Rahway Prison, known for her firm but compassionate approach for handling prisoners. From 1996 to 2018, she was an employee of distinction at Home Depot as a designer/coordinator for window treatments and flooring projects, and in 2013, was honored with a regional award for outstanding customer service.

In addition to her career accomplishments, Johanna was active in her respective communities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She wrote a column on vegetarian food in the Mountain Lakes newspaper, volunteered as a nurses aide to seniors and participated in the Scranton Architect Association.

Johanna was a people-person, known for her kindness and empathy toward others. Years of working with celebrities, prisoners and retail customer service allowed her to demonstrate her invaluable people skills. She was also known for her gourmet cooking and until her last years was a health and fitness devotee. Above all, Johanna was known for her keen sense of fashion, showing her commitment to the spirit of the 1960s. She will be remembered for her flowing silver locks and streaks of auburn hair.

Johanna is survived by her long-term partner, Robert Bailey; two daughters, Theresa Naman and her husband, Bruce, and Astra Beck; former husband, Bill Beck; sister, Nancy Prusicki and her husband, Rich; nephews, Rich Golia Jr. and his son, Richie; nieces, Gina Foley and her daughter, Farah; and several cousins.

Due to the rise in COVID-19, a private post-cremation service will be withheld until further notice. The family asks that donations may be made in the form of two candles lit for Johanna at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows: https://snows.org/submit-a-prayer-request/light-a-candle/.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton.

Please visit the funeral home website to leave an online condolence.
