Madison H. Manis

CHURCH HILL - Madison Henry Manis, 80, of Stroupe Court, went home to be with his heavenly Father Wednesday morning (June 18, 2003) at Wellmont Hawkins County Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County and was in World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Coast Artillery with the South Pacific Fleet. He was a retired truck driver and had also worked in construction. He loved to farm, fish and was an avid knife collector.

He was saved as a young man and was a member of Vision Missionary Baptist Church in Carters Valley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. Manis and Lissie Wilson Manis; three sisters, Gladys Manis, Freddie Burchfield and Ruth Mayo; two brothers, Otis Manis and Wayne Manis; and very close friends, Beverly Ann Churchwell and Ralph Manis.

Surviving are his loving wife of 57 years (June 1, 2003), Bobbie Spitzer Manis, of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Dempsey Ward, Karen and Michael Dalton, Debbie and Gary Housewright, all of Church Hill, and Janet and Jerry Matthews, of Kingsport; three sons and daughter-in-law, Gerald Wayne Manis, Church Hill, Larry and Louise Manis, Church Hill, and Gary (Randy) Manis, Kingsport; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer Hawks, Sharon Helton, Jason Ward, Justin Housewright, Courtney Housewright, Travis Manis, Shane Manis, Casey Manis, Brandy Matthews, Ginger Matthews and Kayla Matthews; five great-grandchildren, Michael Keeton, McKenzie Keeton, Joseph Helton, Dalton Manis, Jacob Light; and one expected great-grandson; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Rev. Kenneth Phillips, Church Hill; brother and sister-in-law, Virgil and Nanalee Manis, Surgoinsville; special nephews, Lynn Hutson and Tony Spitzer; special nieces, Reta Mellons and LaDonna Presley; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Carter Trent Funeral Homes of Church Hill. Friends may call anytime at the residence, 730 Stroupe Court, Apt. 206.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Phillips and the Rev. Brian Thurman officiating.

Military graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Longs Bend Church Cemetery by Hawkins County Color Guard. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home by 1 p.m. to go in procession.
