Rocky's parents were separated when he was young. His mother took the four children to live with her parents on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in Oklahoma. at the age of seven, his father took him and his sister, Viola, to live with him in Phoenix, where he attended school. Rocky enjoyed school
He started his boxing career by whipping the school bully in high school. He won the Welder Weight title two years in a row, and also the golden Glove tournament. He became a professional fighter and fought 11 professional fights and won them all. His boxing career ended when World War II started.
Rocky joined the U.S. Air Force and trained as a pilot. He shipped from New York to Liverpool, England where he was assigned to a B-17 Bomber as a pilot with his crew of nine. Their first mission was a run on Berlin. Rocky flew a total of 51 missions.
In 1944 he was shot down over Germany. Three survived of his nine man crew. They were taken prisoners and sent to Nuremberg Prison Camp, where he spent the next two and a half years. They were liberated by the English 1st Army.
He was discharged in 1946.
In 1955, he met his first wife, Viola. They had six children; Jim, Rocklyn, Sherri, Becky, Bobbie and Jeff. They were later separated.
Rocky trucked for many years moving to Thayne, in 1979 as assistant manager at the Star Valley Cheese Co.
In 1980 he leased a cafe in Thayne. It was at this time he met his future wife, Gloria. They were married in December 1980.
Rocky continued trucking for some years, hauling cheese to New York, New Jersey and the western states.
Rocky is survived by his wife, Gloria, his son Jeff (Mary) Knight, Las Vegas; daughters, Rocklyn and Bobbie Knight, Kendallville, Ind; and Sherri Starr, Thayne; stepson Jon (Deanna) Clark, Etna; and step daughters, Debra (Johnny) Titensor, Thayne; and Vicki Rainey, Afton.
Rocky was preceded in death by a son, Jim and daughter, Becky, son-in-law, David Starr and two stepdaughters, Valeri and Jani.
Funeral services for Floyd "Rocky" Knight will be held on Friday, February 9, 2007 at noon in the Etna LDS Chapel.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, February 8, from 6-8 p.m. at the Schwab Funeral Chapel in Thayne, and Friday from 10:30-11:45 a. m. prior to the funeral services at the church.
