US Congressman. He was a successful tool manufacturer in North Easton and a member of the executive council of Massachusetts in 1860. In 1863, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-eighth Congress and to the four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1873. Not a candidate for renomination, he became involved in railroad construction and was instrumental in establishing the first transcontinental railroad line.
