Mary Jane was the daughter of Franklin and Susan West Lount. She first married John Newton Welsh in Michigan in 1866. John, a Civil War veteran, had 3 daughters and son by a previous marriage. John and Mary Jane migrated south stopping in Iowa for several years before eventually settling in Summerfield, KS. At one time they owned the Summerfield Hotel. After John's death in 1902, Mary Jane married Timothy D Mills in Sabetha, Nemaha, Kansas on 4 Jan 1909.

Topeka State Journal, 31 May 1923:
Mrs. Mary Welch Mills, age 87, died this morning at her residence, 1734 Clay Street. She is survived by her husband, T. D. Mills; four sons, Harvey C. Welch, Seattle, Wash.; L. R. Welch, Kansas City, Mo.; J. C. Welch, Topeka, and Henry Welch, Summerfield; three daughters, Mrs. J. H. Keith, Bath, Ill.; Mrs. Ada Jordan, Anthony, Kan.; and Mrs. Susan Hudgins, Weston, Mo. She had lived in Topeka since 1916. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Mrs. Mary Welch Mills, 87, died Thursday at her residence, 1724 Clay Street. She had lived in Topeka for seven years. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Welch Mills, 87, who died Thursday at her residence, 1724 Clay Street, will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock at Penwell's funeral chapel. Burial will be in Summerfield, Kan.

Summerfield Sun, Friday, 8 June 1923:
The funeral of Mrs. M. J. Mills, of Topeka, formerly known as Mrs. Welsh, was held at the U. P. Church Monday afternoon, June 4. Mrs. Mills was a former resident of Summerfield having left about fifteen years ago and resided in Topeka since. A brief service was held at Topeka, Saturday. The service at Summerfield was brief after which interment was made at the Summerfield cemetery. The relatives out of town were: Mr. M. J. Mills and son Frank, and John Welsh of Topeka; Mr. and Mrs. Harve Welsh of Seattle, Washington; Mr. and Mrs. Lount Welsh and children of Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. Orval Hodgens and Emily Burns of Kansas City, Mo.; and Mrs. Zona Keith , of Bath, Ill.
