Actor. He will be remembered for his distinguished career both on and off Broadway. Born George Michael Bartenieff, his parents were professional dancers. Due to his father's Jewish heritage, his family fled Germany prior to the Nazi's uprising and settled in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He began his career in entertainment as a part of his parent's act and at the age of fourteen, he made his Broadway debut in the comedy "The Whole World Over" (1947). He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and remained in London for a few years, prior to returning to New York where he was a regular presence in theatre productions. He made his motion picture debut in the low-budget film "The Brig" (1964) and went on to have a more substantial role as 'Nitro' in the Arnold Schwarzenegger cult picture "Hercules in New York" (1970). In 2006, he distinguished himself when he received a Drama Desk Award for the off-Broadway production "Stuff Happens." He will be remembered by TV audiences for his recurring role as 'Judge Shawn MacNamara" in the series "Law & Order" (1993 to 2004). He was formerly married to actress Crystal Field. At the time of his death, he was married to playwright and director Karen Malpede.
