College Football Coach. He was the head football coach at Tulane, Arizona, at USC, and at the University of Missouri. He led the USC Trojans to three Rose Bowl appearances beginning in the late 1980s, defeating Michigan 17 to 10 in the 1990 New Year's classic. He compiled a record of 143 wins, 126 losses and seven ties during 24 years of college coaching. Prior to assuming the head coaching position at Tulane University, he served as an assistant coach at Miami of Ohio and the University of Michigan under Bo Schembechler. During his coaching tenure, his teams appeared in ten bowl games, where he compiled a record of three wins, seven losses and one tie. He died from complications of leukemia and lymphoma at the age of 68.
