Mary Therese Murphy
Date Of Birth: 02/16/1943
Date of Death: 05/31/2022

Mary Therese Miller was born on February 16th, 1943, to Edna Crowley and Joseph Miller in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, New York. She was the third child of four and the only daughter of the Miller family. She was born and raised in Brooklyn close to all of her Ormsby cousins and grew to love them as siblings.
Mary graduated from St. Brendan High School and entered the convent at age seventeen. She went to St. Joseph's College and was a sister of St. Joseph, Sister Celine Marie, for nine years. It was during that time that Mary found her passion for teaching and for children. When asked about her decision to leave the convent, her response was simple, "In order to grow in my faith with God, I needed to experience life beyond the convent." So she moved to the beach with her dear friends and continued teaching elementary school.
Four months after getting engaged, on a rainy Thursday, April 18th, 1975, she married Joseph Charles Gerard Murphy, at St. Peters Church in Staten Island, New York. And so began a whirlwind adventure. Joe got a job with the Providence Hospital System across the country on the West Coast. He gave Mary the option of moving to Sammamish, Washington, Yakima, Washington, or Medford, Oregon. Her response was, "Well, I can say and spell Medford, so let's go there." They moved to Medford the following year.
Joseph and Mary welcomed Maureen Edna Murphy on October 9, 1977.
Mary took a short hiatus from teaching while Maureen was growing up and returned to teach at Sacred Heart Elementary School (when Maureen was in the 6th grade). This started a career in many facets at Sacred Heart. Her love of her hundreds of students over the years was always evident in every lesson and study that she did. Mary continued to teach while also engaging as the Vice Principal and worked alongside many good friends, as well as Perry Martin, the Principal. She retired from Sacred Heart in the summer of 2008 as Principal of the School.
Mary spent much of her retirement spending time with family and friends, especially with Fr. Andrew Thomas and his family.
One of the most important lessons Mary taught Maureen throughout her lifetime is how friends can become family members. Mary was very good at "adopting" others around her and treating them as her own. For example, her sister-in-laws were never "in-laws", they were simply her sisters and best friends.
Mary joins her husband, Joseph Murphy, her parents, her brothers Joseph & Stephen Miller, her beloved sister-in-law, Grace Miller, and her granddog, Lizzie, as well as many friends and cousins up in the pearly gates. Knowing that she is with the love of her life brings peace to all of us that are close to her and love her.
Those of us who are still here on Earth will miss her love. We will miss her positivity, gratitude, smile, laugh, and amazing faith. Heaven gained a shining light on Tuesday May 31, 2022. Fitting that it was the feast of the visitation of Mary.
Mary's Celebration of Life will be held on Friday June 10th, 2022, at Sacred Heart Parish in Medford, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary Murphy's name to the Carmelite Monastery at carmeliteauxiliary.org or Carmel of the Holy Family and St. Therese at PO Box 4210; Georgetown, CA 95634.
