Interred with her mother, Eva (nee Prouty) Barnitz, who died while giving birth to her in St. Paul, Minnesota, this newborn girl joined her mother in death that same day. Her grief-stricken young father, Albert Barnitz--later to win acclaim as a Civil War and frontier cavalry officer--had brought the bodies of his beloved "Little Eva" and their firstborn child home to Mentor, Ohio, for burial in the Prouty Family plot here. With the outbreak of the Civil War soon afterwards, Barnitz joined the Union Army and consequently embarked on his distinguished military career. After the war he married another young woman from the Cincinnati area, Jennie Platt, by whom he had three more daughters. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery after his death in 1912.
