William Elbert "Bill" Burgess, 81, died at his home in Virginia Beach on Friday, July 22, 2022.

Bill was born in Elizabeth City on September 1, 1940 to the late Elbert Leary Burgess and Doris Gard Burgess. He attended public schools where he became a legendary athlete, graduating from Elizabeth City High School in 1958. During his senior year, as a first-team all state halfback playing under NCHSAA Hall of Fame coach Bob Brooks, he led the Yellow Jackets to an undefeated season and the state championship defeating Myers Park High School of Charlotte in the title game.

He then moved on to Wake Forest on a full football scholarship to play for coach Paul Amen. There was a lot of optimism at Wake at the time. They already had future All American quarterback and number two pick in the NFL draft Norman Snead. Now they were about to add the state's best halfback to that backfield. Sadly a severe knee injury early in his collegiate career ended his football playing days.

Bill was also a very talented musician and entertainer who enjoyed performing as a singer and guitarist.

He graduated from UNC Chapel Hill and later from Georgetown University School of Law. He practiced law in Virginia Beach until his retirement.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 45 years, Anne Moore Burgess and his parents. They enjoyed being active with the Corova Beach Volunteer Fire Department while staying in their beach house there. He is survived by a brother, Bob Burgess of Kitty Hawk.

Per Bill's request there will be no funeral service.
