Presidential mother. Born in Hartford, Connecticut where her mother was visiting from Savannah. Known as Mittie by her family she lived initially in Savannah, Georgia. Her family moved to Roswell north of Atlanta when she was about five. She met Theodore Roosevelt (Senior) who was impressed with her wit and beauty. They married on December 22, 1853 in Roswell, Georgia. They would have four children; Anna, Theodore, Corinne, and Elliot. During the American Civil War, two of Mittie's brothers fought for the Confederacy and she surreptitiously sent packages of medicine and supplies south throughout the conflict. In February 1884 Mittie came down with a fever which doctors thought might be typhoid. Two days after the birth of her grandchild, at about 3:00 a.m. on St. Valentine's Day as her son, Theodore, split a vigil between her bed and that of his dying wife one floor above, Mittie died of the fever.
