William Eugene Hughes

HATTIESBURG, MS - William (Bill) Eugene Hughes died at Forrest General Hospital on July 29, 2022. He was born on September 12, 1932, in Centreville, MS, the oldest son of Clarence E. Hughes and Willie Mae (Smith) Hughes.

He is a graduate of Centreville High School (William Winans Institute), the University of Southern Mississippi, and the University of Alabama where he received a Ph.D. in physics. He held a one year post-doctoral fellowship at Alabama before accepting employment at Stetson University in DeLand, FL. After five years in Florida, he accepted the position of Chair, Department of Physics and Astronomy at Southern Mississippi, a position he held for most of his career.

He retired in 2003 as Professor Emeritus. His area of research was electron spin resonance in which he authored several scientific papers in international refereed journals. One of his favorite activities was developing physics teaching apparatus for high schools and designing laboratory experiments, a project for which he and a colleague worked on for multiple years and produced a well-received laboratory manual.

Apart from his academic accomplishments, Bill was a Navy veteran having served as a Boatswains Mate on the USS Grand Canyon AD-28. He was a member of University Baptist Church in Hattiesburg where he served in several capacities. He was a member of the Rotary club of Hattiesburg for over 50 years serving as secretary, treasurer, and president of the club. Astronomy was a hobby in his early years, and he was always pleased that he could interact with so many local people by sponsoring field trips to USM's Observatory.
