Born March 11, 1923, in New Orleans, Louisiana and raised in Bronx, New York, Evelyn was the daughter of the late James Layne and the late Cora Roach Layne.
Evelyn worked for IBM as a keypunch operator and later was employed by the USPS as a mail sorter. Evelyn worked there for many years and retired from the USPS.
Evelyn was a dedicated and selfless mother to her three sons often going out of her way to make sure that their needs were met. She encouraged and supported their interests making sure they were able to participate in various extracurricular activities at school. She had a great sense of humor and her favorite food was ice cream. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Evelyn is survived by her three sons, Alan Brooks, Vernal King and Anthony King; 5 grandchildren, Brian, Alieta, Donna, Nichole and Christopher; 11 great grandchildren; Aijion, Nalah, Aniyah, Jalen, Xiariah, Kamari, Krystalyn, Kyleiah, Kayleen, Bode and Jaina; niece Annmarie; great nieces Eileen and Ericka and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her brothers James and Calvin Layne; and her husbands, Ertha Brooks and Hebert King.
Evelyn's Memorial Service will be held by Zoom, on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at 2:00pm.
